£90m Designer Outlet expansion drives long term growth

Work is now officially underway for the £90 million expansion of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Ashford – one of Ashford Borough Council’s Big 8 projects, which aims to drive long term economic growth for the area.

The expansion at the Designer Outlet will create 500 new jobs for the area and will add 50 new premium retail brands, attracting 5 million visitors to Ashford per year by 2023. The improvements to local roads and pedestrian walkways surrounding the centre are part of a long term project to make roads safer and improve traffic flows.

As part of the works, planned infrastructure improvements have been scheduled to include the introduction of a signalised junction and a pedestrian crossing, which will make it easier for people to move between the International Station, the town centre and the Designer Outlet. This will include a complete re-landscape of the area. Junction 10a of the M20 will also be improved to enhance commuting time to and from the town.

The expansion of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Ashford and infrastructure improvements were granted planning permission by Ashford Borough Council in 2015.

Victoria Park Friends Group meeting and event to promote the park

Ashford Borough Council are looking to make Victoria Park a better place to visit, with thanks to support from the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund*. The council have secured initial funding to develop a £3.7m restoration and improvement project, and would like residents to be involved in the development of the project.

If you’re passionate about Victoria Park and think you could you help to make decisions about the way it is improved, managed and maintained, or want to meet like-minded people and work together to make the park a better place for everyone then you might be interested to join the newly formed Friends of Victoria Park Group for their second meeting at the Civic Centre on Friday 20th April, at 6.05pm**.

The meeting is an opportunity to share and discuss ideas about how the park could be managed and maintained, and what the local issues are and how to address them.

Victoria Park has a pivotal role to play in connecting residents with Ashford’s history, the local area and the built, cultural and natural heritage of the site. Future plans for the park could include improving the play areas, more outdoor activities for volunteers, improvements for wildlife and refurbishment of the fountain.

As well as the Friends meeting, a consultation event is planned in the park on Saturday 21st April. This is a fun and engaging opportunity for residents to find out about potential plans for the park as well as giving their own views and opinions on what future improvements could be. Packed full of fun activities for all ages, the event will run between 9.30am and 3.30pm near to the Hubert Fountain.

Anyone unable to attend the Friends Group meeting or the consultation event can still get involved by filling out an online survey about the park and find out more information about the project by visiting or via the Twitter and Facebook feeds, @VictoriaParkABC and Victoria Park Ashford.
